Imagine this: It’s Monday and you stir from your lovely sleep and grab the bed clock which reads quarter to seven in the morning. You curse all the living beings on earth and hold them directly accountable for not able to complete the most desirous dream that you were so enjoying till that dreadful moment. Then it happens! Holy God it happens! You realize that you do not actually have to get up from the bed. You are on a vacation! You pinch yourself, you punch the wall and finally ascertain that this not an illusion, it is a reality. You want to go and hug everyone who you had cursed few minutes ago; you do a jig and invite the wrath of your wife who is yet to see the morning.
Well, all this and more happened to me recently. However not before a bout of arduous and strenuous job for good length of time which involved counting of the floor tiles while your boss was yelling at your scalp (Read pate) or memorizing the make of the phone during the conference call which had a pompous outsourcer at the other end or thinking of the mug full of lager while your sub-ordinate was rambling on his/her achievements in the gone year.
I had my break! Let me rephrase: I ‘earned’ my break!
Before the reader begins to anticipate which travelogue am I now going to endorse or which place has more pristine waterfalls etc. let me clarify that my vacation was spent at home. Home sweet home!
That Monday, after being spared by my wife, I went and sat on my couch and looked out of the window and smiled. I smiled because Mr. Pawar was in his usual haste to secure a seat in the 8:36 fast local and I had my seat secured on my couch. I smiled because Mr. Rathod will miss today’s important tie between India and South Africa and will have to do with the highlights whereas I will be glued to every ball being bowled while sipping on gallons of soda and tones of chips. I smiled because I could smile on a Monday morning.
I wanted to catch up with every task that I had left untouched all this time, such as organizing my documents and filing away neatly. I did reach there half way. I wanted rearrange my clothes in the wardrobe so that I don’t get buried under those the next time I open it. I did manage to get to rack 2 and only 3 more to go. I wanted to complete reading the famous book written by a famous author and which eventually won a famous award. I achieved this completely!!
After a productive Monday and as I settled into my vacation, I started to reach out to other unfinished jobs that hitherto were never in my ‘daily planner’.
Before I knew, it was Sunday evening and I sat there not depressed that I had to catch up with my routine the next morning but glad that the week gone was going to remind me that I need to take such breaks frequently.
My job gave me the wheels to enjoy my life, my vacation gave me an opportunity to stand aside and review my life!
I hope you do not draw inspiration from this, lest you lose your job in quest for a vacation!
