Deliberate swearing, absolutely offensive language, relentless arguments. No I am not trying to describe a Lok Sabha situation. This is a situation where a bunch of boys, in their Sunday attire and sweating out in the hot sun playing an intense game of volleyball. Let me clarify to the reader that this is not a war of rivals across streets, but this is a version of enjoyment of friends who have been together for more than 15 years.
It all began with cricket, what else! We used play each day, fight, snarl and get back together after the game. These evolved into secretly smoking together. Together we collected 10 rs. per day which would fund our 2 cigarettes and mouth fresheners. If lucky, we would have some extra cash for a hot cup of tea. Never did a day pass when we did not meet or as we jokingly say 'Tolerate' each other.
Sunday's schedule was busier than that of a CEO. Mornings - Volleyball (refer para 1 for effects), lunch break and then meet at the roof for cards (yes serious game of Flash). Although we never remember if the money actually changed hands as it was 'rolled on' to the next week. After this a courtesy presence back at home so that parents can confirm our existence. At dusk , we were back at the roof for a peg of Vodka (Alcazer was the brand..) One of us will bring food for all.
Once we decided to make a lantern for Christmas for the entire area. The roof was turned into a part time workshop. Everyone of us amazed each other with the creativity displayed and what turned out was not just a memorable KANDIL but also unforgettable nights spent on the roof working and yes smoking! Once the Kandil was put up, there would be no end to our pride.
We spent every festival together and thankfully still do. Time, of course, altered things. Piyush went to the states to pursue further studies. Leslie started his shipping job which requires him to stay offshore for 6 months. Jaggu settled for a job in Muscat. Sava, Jitya, Suhas, Tomchi, Viral, Vipul & me got involved in our jobs.
2008 was the turning point for us as 4 members of the group got married. That is after Suhas, Jitya & I got married in the previous years. Now its not just us boys, but also the ladies wing of Naka.
Life changes for the good and ours were no different. We still meet each Saturday for a bout of beers and laughter and vow in our hearts that this will continue.
